Vibration influences on museum exhibits
To protect works of art, the Rathgen Research Laboratory of the Berlin State Museums (https://www.smb.museum/en/museums-institutions/rathgen-forschungslabor/home/) commissioned vibration monitoring during a music concert in the Lustgarten in front of the Altes Museum.
The vibrations were measured and recorded on the floor near the exhibits and on the glass display cases. Preliminary investigations showed that the mounting of the “Berlin glass amphora from Olbia” exhibits a resonance region at around 60Hz. It was therefore agreed with the concert organizer to reduce the sound level at around 60Hz by using appropriate equalizer settings. A recurring challenge in such investigations is determining how much vibration an exhibit can tolerate without sustaining damage.
