Laser vibrometry | Laser Doppler vibrometer

Laser Doppler vibrometers are used for non-contact vibration measurements of surfaces, where the laser determines the vibration amplitude and frequency from the Doppler shift of the reflected laser beam frequency due to the vibration of the surface.

Description

Advantages of laser Doppler vibrometers over other measuring devices such as accelerometers include the fact that laser Doppler vibrometers can be aimed at objects that are difficult to reach or at objects that are unsuitable for attaching sensors due to their size or temperature. Especially in modal analysis, the non-contact measurement method guarantees an accurate determination of the modal variables.

Application & Integration

Laser Doppler vibrometers are used in a variety of different areas, such as

  • Aerospace
  • Acoustics
  • Architecture
  • Automotive industry
  • Materials research

Single point laser Doppler vibrometer

The most common type of laser Doppler vibrometer, single-point laser Doppler vibrometers are ideal sensors for non-contact measurement of vibrations, particularly in light structures.
