Vibration influences on museum exhibits
To protect works of art, the Rathgen Research Laboratory of the Berlin State Museums (
https://www.smb.museum/en/museums-institutions/rathgen-forschungslabor/home/
) commissioned vibration monitoring during a music concert in the Lustgarten in front of the Altes Museum.
The vibrations were recorded on the floor near the exhibits and on the glass display cases. Preliminary investigations showed that the mounting of the “Amphora from Olbia” exhibits a resonance range at approximately 60Hz. Therefore, an agreement was reached with the concert organizer to reduce the noise level at approximately 60Hz by adjusting the equalizer settings accordingly. The question of how much vibration an exhibit can tolerate without sustaining damage is always problematic in such investigations.
